On March 28, 2023, the Inspector General testified before the House Appropriations Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee on the top management challenges facing the Department of Transportation. The Inspector General focused on three cross-cutting areas: (1) safety improvements, (2) stewardship of infrastructure spending, and (3) new transportation and workforce concerns.
On March 7, 2023, FHWA suspended Dennis Ferreira, a former Superintendent at Barletta Heavy Division, Inc., from participating in all federally funded programs and projects. In December 2022, Ferreira pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island to making false statements in connection with a federally funded highway project.
Pursuant to the Government Corporation Control Act of 1945, as amended, we are initiating an audit of the Great Lakes Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation’s (GLS) financial statements for fiscal years 2023 and 2022. We have engaged Allmond & Company, LLC (Allmond), an independent public accounting firm, to conduct this audit subject to our oversight. Our audit objective will be to express an opinion on whether GLS’s financial statements are fairly presented, in all material respects, in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States.
Under contract with us, KPMG, LLP reviewed the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) fiscal year 2021 compliance with the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2014 (DATA Act). In its audit report, KPMG made four recommendations, two of which were repeat recommendations from a prior year. KPMG performed follow up testing on its recommendations, pursuant to DATA Act requirements. KPMG found that one of its 2021 recommendations could be closed, and we have closed that recommendation.
