On November 6, 2023, the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court for Broward County, Florida entered into a settlement agreement with National American Van Lines, LLC, operating under Gold Standard Moving and Storage, LLC. The defendants agreed to pay a total of $75,000 in customer restitution and civil penalties for engaging in deceptive trade practices related to advertising, marketing, offering, and providing moving services to consumers in Florida and elsewhere. 

On February 14, 2024, Aviv Mordechai and Oz Ezra Malka pleaded guilty in the Eighth Judicial District Court of Clark County, Nevada, to conspiracy to commit multiple transactions involving fraud or deceit in course of enterprise or occupation. Mordechai and Malka were sentenced to $37,257.88 in joint restitution and each ordered to forfeit $18,628.94 and $9,314.47, respectively. Additionally, on February 8, 2024, Ashley Roybal and Mario Samson were indicted and convicted in the same court.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is responsible for enforcing the Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) regulation, implemented in 1997, to protect roadway workers by preventing accidents and deaths caused by moving trains or maintenance machines. However, 96 roadway workers died in accidents from 1997 through 2022—roughly 22 percent of all 442 railroad employee fatalities during this period.

On March 20, 2024, a criminal complaint was filed in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami-Dade County, Florida against Michael Keith Reid, owner of Mike's Auto Miami, Inc., for dealing with fake airbags, forgery, and counterfeiting more than $20,000.

On March 19, 2024, in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts, Ngan Dinh, a driving instructor, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit honest services mail fraud. On January 31, 2024, an information was filed charging Dinh.

On March 18, 2024, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) suspended Al's Asphalt Paving Company, Inc., and part owners Edward Donald Swanson, president, and William A. Williamson, former president, from participating in all federally funded procurement and non-procurement programs. 

In accordance with the Accountability of Tax Dollars Act of 2002, we are initiating an audit of the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) financial statements for fiscal years 2024 and 2023. The objective of this audit will be to express an opinion on whether NTSB’s financial statements are fairly presented, in all material respects, in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States.

What We Looked At

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is responsible for improving the U.S. marine transportation system to meet the Nation’s economic, environmental, and security needs. It also administers and oversees the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP). The PIDP provides discretionary grants on a competitive basis to projects intended to improve the safety, efficiency, or reliability of the movement of goods into, out of, around, or within a port.
