The Federal Information Security Modernization Act of 2014 (FISMA) requires Federal agencies to implement information security programs. The act also requires agencies to conduct annual independent reviews to determine the effectiveness of their programs and report the reviews’ results to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). We have contracted with an independent public accounting firm to conduct the review of the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) information security program, subject to our oversight.

On January 8, 2021, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut entered into a civil settlement agreement with Ducci Electrical Contractors, Inc. Ducci agreed to pay more than $3.2 million plus interest to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act.

On April 15, 2020, a final civil judgment was entered against Yehoshua Vaknin and his company US Moving Services Inc., d/b/a as Safeway Moving & Storage, in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Florida. The consent final judgment and stipulated permanent injunction totaled $1,055,455, consisting of $326,000 in restitution against Vaknin and $729,455 in restitution, corporate penalties, and fees against US Moving Services Inc.

On December 31, 2020, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York entered into a civil settlement agreement with The Fenceman, Inc. Fenceman agreed to pay $109,000 to resolve civil False Claims Act allegations relating to their receipt of Federal aid contracts as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) through the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).

On January 12, 2021, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Jonathan Wolverton pleaded guilty to aiming a laser pointer at a police aircraft. The investigation revealed that on June 25, 2020, Wolverton attended a demonstration in Richmond, Virginia, concealed himself in the crowd, and used a laser pointer to illuminate law enforcement aircraft flying overhead. Wolverton struck the aircraft with the laser multiple times, causing the pilots to experience temporary blindness.

On January 7, 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division’s Fraud Section charged The Boeing Company with conspiracy to defraud the United States. On the same date, Boeing entered into a deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) and agreed to pay over $2.5 billion.

The Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform asked 24 Federal offices of inspector general, including our office, to examine agencies’ plans for returning employees to Federal offices in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

On November 8, 2018, the Office of Inspector General announced an audit of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) role in authorizing small unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations, including the Agency’s automated system called the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability, known as LAANC. Due to other priority requests from the Department and Congress, we temporarily suspended this audit in April 2019 and then terminated it on January 13, 2021.
