Florida Individual Sentenced in Connection With the Destruction of a Drone Owned by the Lake County Sheriff's Office

On February 22, 2024, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida sentenced Wendell Goney to 48 months of incarceration, 3 years of supervised release, $29,034.00 in restitution, and a $100 assessment. In October 2023, Goney pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm affecting commerce by a convicted felon.
In July 2021, Goney fired a rifle and struck a drone owned and operated by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), causing the drone’s destruction. Goney admitted to LCSO deputies that they fired at the drone and knew the firearm was illegally possessed due to previous felony convictions.
DOT-OIG conducted this investigation with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and LCSO.
