Washington Individual Sentenced for Smuggling Goods and Violating the Clean Air Act
On January 28, 2022, Christopher Cox was sentenced in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington to 30 days of incarceration, 5 years of supervised release, and a $300 special assessment. Restitution will be determined at a later date. In September 2021, Cox pleaded guilty to smuggling illegal goods into the United States and making false statements in violation of the Clean Air Act. The investigation revealed that between 2015 and 2019, Cox falsified and filed documentation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to import a foreign-manufactured motor vehicle into the United States.
DOT-OIG is conducting this investigation with HSI and the EPA Criminal Investigative Division.
