Maine Individual Sentenced for Highway Program Fraud
On January 18, 2022, Jim Wentworth was sentenced in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine to 1 year of probation, a $35,000 fine, and a $100 special assessment. In June 2021, Wentworth, a project manager for construction company Reed & Reed, Inc., pleaded guilty to making false statements related to a federally approved highway project. In May 2019, Wentworth received an itemized cost list from a subcontractor, falsely inflated the costs, and submitted the falsified list to the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) in a contract modification. Wentworth executed the contract modification using the inflated cost amounts from June through December 2019. As a result, MDOT made more than $91,000 in overpayments to Reed & Reed, Inc.
