Utah Individual Sentenced for Major Fraud Against the United States
On September 27, 2021, the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah sentenced Shaun Froelich to 12 months of probation, a $105,000 fine, and a $100 special assessment. On December 1, 2020, Froelich pleaded guilty to one count of major fraud. With another individual, Froelich executed a scheme to obtain money and property by fraudulent pretenses, representations, and promises in a contract with the United States valued at more than $1 million. The conspirators also submitted an invoice requesting payment under the fraudulently obtained contract. The investigation revealed that both the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and FAA had awarded contracts; however, the plea agreement was not based on contracts funded by FAA.
DOT-OIG conducted this investigation with VA-OIG, Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Army Criminal Investigation Division, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
