Bus Company Operator Sentenced for Bribing a Federal Safety Inspector

On October 13, 2020, the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts convicted and sentenced Le Wen Wu (Wu) to 12 months’ home confinement, 24 months’ probation, 200 hours’ community service, a $4,000 court fine, and a $300 assessment fee. Wu is the owner and sole corporate officer of L&W Travel Inc., a passenger bus charter company.
On October 8, 2019, Wu pleaded guilty to conspiracy to pay and bribe a public official. Specifically, he paid a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) safety investigator $2,800 to influence a compliance review and safety audit of L&W in July and August 2018. He wanted to ensure that L&W’s buses would remain in service and that the company would not be subject to significant fines despite multiple safety violations.
DOT-OIG conducted this investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from FMCSA.
