Bus Company Operator Sentenced for Bribing a Federal Safety Inspector

On October 13, 2020, the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts convicted and sentenced Le Wen Wu to 2 years of probation, which includes 12 months of home confinement, 200 hours of community service, a $4,000 court fine, and a $300 assessment fee. Wu is the owner and sole corporate officer of L&W Travel Inc., a passenger bus charter company.

On October 8, 2019, Wu pleaded guilty to conspiracy to pay and bribe a public official. Specifically, he paid a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) safety investigator $2,800 to influence a compliance review and safety audit of L&W in July and August 2018. He wanted to ensure that L&W’s buses would remain in service and that the company would not be subject to significant fines despite multiple safety violations.

DOT-OIG conducted this investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from FMCSA.
