Montana Business Owner Ordered to Pay Restitution

On August 28, 2020, the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana issued an amended judgment that ordered Peter Margiotta to pay restitution in the amount of $100,000.

Margiotta was the president, CEO, and owner of Custom Carbon Processing, Inc. (CCP), a slop-oil processing and recycling company near Wibaux, Montana. The investigation revealed that he accepted hazardous materials (hazmat) at CCP even though the facility was not designed, constructed, or operated to handle such materials. An explosion occurred during the offloading of the illegally transported hazmat, injuring three employees.

DOT-OIG conducted this investigation with the Environmental Protection Agency–Criminal Investigation Division.
