Alabama Man Sentenced for Accessing FMCSA Databases Without Authorization

On June 12, 2019, Gary Stratton was sentenced in U.S. District Court, Montgomery, Alabama, to 2 years’ probation, a $100 special assessment, and $3,200 fine for committing computer-related fraud. Stratton was charged via information on March 5, 2019, and pleaded guilty.

DOT-OIG’s investigation revealed that between June 2018 and January 2019, Stratton intentionally accessed Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) databases without authorization for financial gain and commercial advantage. He was employed by a company that provided motor carrier consulting services in Alabama and gained access to sensitive FMCSA databases using credentials he obtained while working as a trooper for the Alabama Highway Patrol.

DOT-OIG and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency conducted this investigation, assisted by FMCSA.
