Former PennDOT Executive Sentenced for Accepting Bribes
On January 22, 2019, Nicholas Martino, a former assistant district executive at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 6, was sentenced in Montgomery County Magisterial District Court 38-1-25, Bridgeport, Pennsylvania, to 9–23 months’ house arrest, a $10,000 fine, and 50 hours of community service. The sentence followed Martino’s guilty plea to one felony count of accepting improper influence under the Pennsylvania Public Official and Employee Ethics Act. He was charged in June 2018 for participating in a corruption and bribery scheme that affected 27 federally funded maintenance and construction contracts in Pennsylvania.
The investigation revealed that Martino took monetary kickbacks from a PennDOT contractor, over many years, in exchange for ignoring that the contractor had not performed contractually required work. He also helped fire a project inspector who refused to approve work the contractor had not performed.
