Indiana Man Pleads Guilty To Altering and Tampering With Markings on Hazardous Material Cargo Tanks
On July 18, 2018, Kevin Cleveland pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, Indianapolis, Indiana, to one count of altering and tampering with markings on hazardous material (hazmat) cargo tanks. Cleveland was sentenced to 6 months’ probation, 48 hours’ community service, and a $100 special assessment fee. He was arrested on February 13, 2018.
Cleveland operated as an intrastate carrier of petroleum products in the greater Indianapolis area. The investigation disclosed that he had altered and tampered with markings associated with hazmat inspections and tests of a cargo tank, transported hazmat in a cargo tanker that had not been inspected and tested as required, and made and provided false documents to inspectors from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
DOT-OIG conducted this investigation with FMCSA’s assistance.
