Virginia Man Sentenced for Flying Aircraft Without an Airman’s Certificate
On March 23, 2018, Robert R. Gray, Jr. was sentenced in U.S. District Court, Norfolk, Virginia, to 14 days’ incarceration, 12 months’ supervised release, and restitution in the amount of $32,941.06.
On December 19, 2017, Gray pleaded guilty to flying an aircraft without an airman’s certificate. He was indicted on the same charge in October 2017.
On July 22, 2017, Gray piloted a 1972 Piper single-engine aircraft and crashed upon landing at the Umphlett Airstrip in Suffolk, Virginia. Prior to the crash, FAA warned Gray numerous times that he was not authorized to fly an aircraft because he did not possess a valid airman’s or medical certificate.
DOT-OIG conducted this investigation with FAA’s assistance.
