Virginia Man Pleads Guilty for Flying Aircraft Without an Airman’s Certificate
On December 19, Robert R. Gray, Jr., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, Norfolk, Virginia, for flying an aircraft without an airman’s certificate. He was indicted on the same charges in October 2017.
On July 22, 2017, Gray piloted a 1972 Piper single-engine aircraft and crashed upon landing at the Umphlett Airstrip in Suffolk, Virginia. Prior to the crash, FAA had warned Gray numerous times that he was not authorized to fly an aircraft because he did not possess a valid airman’s or medical certificate.
DOT-OIG is conducting this investigation with assistance from FAA.
