South Georgia Nurse Practitioner Pleads Guilty to Falsification of Records
On September 21, 2017, Tonya Yawn-Lewis of Helena, Georgia, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, Southern District of Georgia, to one count of falsification of records with intent to impede proper administration of DOT. Yawn-Lewis is a nurse practitioner and, at the time of the offense, was an approved medical examiner on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
DOT-OIG’s investigation revealed that Yawn-Lewis routinely signed DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificates and Medical Examination Reports for commercial driver’s license holders without examining the drivers.
DOT-OIG is investigating this case with the Drug Enforcement Administration, with assistance from FMCSA.
