Audit Initiated of FAA's Reallocation of the JPDO's NextGen Long Term Planning Responsibilities

Requested by the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Subcommittee on Space

The Office of Inspector General is initiating an audit on the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) reallocation of its Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO) responsibilities. The JPDO was initially established to develop a long-term plan for implementing the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) and coordinate research efforts with other Federal agencies. However, FAA recently reallocated the JPDO’s functions and responsibilities to the Agency’s NextGen Office. Our audit objectives are to determine (1) how FAA has reallocated the JPDO’s responsibilities for identifying high-priority research and development, and (2) whether FAA has developed an effective structure to coordinate high-priority research and development with other Federal agencies.
