Ohio Bridge Painter Charged for Filing False Payroll
On November 15, 2012, Nicholas Scordos, Owner of NES Construction, LLC (NES), a bridge painting and repair company in Ohio, was charged with tax evasion for providing false payroll reports on federally-funded Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) projects.
Mr. Scordos' false payroll reports underreported the amount of hours his employees worked and the amount of wages they earned. This resulted in $42,735 in unreported employment taxes. The investigation disclosed that NES paid employees in split disbursements to avoid paying taxes and overtime wages. Since 2002, NES has worked as a sub-contractor on various ODOT projects totaling over $13 million. They also worked as a sub-contractor on an ARRA funded project valued at $10,235,290.
This is a joint investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service, and U.S. Department of Labor - OIG.
