Assistant Inspector General for Administration and Management
As Assistant Inspector General for Administration and Management, Karl Schuler oversees DOT OIG’s full range of business management services—human resources, training, information technology, facilities and asset management, and acquisitions and procurements. He leads a team that performs critical support functions for all of DOT OIG’s employees—both at Headquarters and in multiple regional offices.
Mr. Schuler served as the Acting Director of the Office of Administration and Management from March 2020 until June 2020—when he was selected for his current position—working with DOT OIG’s leadership team to support business activities during the challenges presented by COVID-19. He joined DOT OIG in October 2016 as Chief Human Capital Officer after serving in the Department of Transportation’s Office of Human Resource Management as Associate Director of the Human Resources (HR) Policy and Accountability and Workforce Quality divisions. Previously, he spent 18 years at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Johnson Space Center (JSC), where he oversaw 120 employees and a program budget of over $17 million. He also led the JSC Exchange—a Federal instrumentality with five lines of business and $6 million in assets—to financial solvency.
Mr. Schuler is a dual career minister who has pastored churches in Texas and Virginia and served on the board of directors for a Lutheran secondary school system with a $10 million operating budget. He has a master’s in practical theology, as well as an M.B.A. with an emphasis in HR management and finance. He enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, music, hiking, skiing, and kayaking.
