Airspace Redesign Efforts Are Critical To Enhance Capacity but Need Major Improvements

Project ID: AV-2005-059
On May 13, we issued our report on FAA’s management and oversight of the National Airspace Redesign (NAR) program, which represents Agency efforts to improve the efficiency of the National Airspace System by redesigning the Nation’s airspace. We found FAA’s overall process for controlling costs, mitigating risks, and coordinating local, regional, and Headquarters efforts were not effective. For example, cost and schedule estimates for airspace redesign were not reliable. We made recommendations to FAA aimed at strengthening FAA’s process for airspace redesign and making efforts more cost effective. FAA has already taken steps to address our recommendations.
