Taxi Driver Sentenced for Defrauding FTA Handicapped Rider Program
November 27, 2001
James Garcia, a Yellow Cab driver in Chicago, IL, was ordered by a U.S. District Court judge in Chicago to pay $27,000 in restitution for taking part in a conspiracy to defraud the Chicago Transit Authority. Garcia teamed with a disabled person to purchase the individual’s subsidized taxi vouchers and then, without giving any rides, claimed the $10 subsidy for each voucher along with the $2 administrative handling fee. The Federal Transit Administration subsidizes taxi rides for disabled individuals who are unable to use public transportation.
