Company Sentenced for Illegally Shipping Hazmat
February 02, 2001
DIAMEX, USA, Inc., a New York based corporation, was sentenced to one year probation and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine by a U.S. District Court judge in Miami on charges of causing hazardous materials to be illegally transported by an air carrier. The charges stem from an August 1998 incident in which an undeclared hazardous materials shipment caused the evacuation of passengers onboard AeroMexico Flight 420 bound from Miami International Airport to Mexico. The company was also ordered to pay $50,000 to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Environmental Crimes Unit, $26,465 in restitution to AeroMexico and $5,436 to the Miami-Dade Fire Department. OIG investigated this criminal case.
